No Task is Easy for DMX and Tashera: Couples Therapy Week 3

On the VH1 series, Couples Therapy, Dr. Jenn Berman is forcing several couples to confront some relationship issues that they wouldn’t want to otherwise speak about. I have been reviewing and sharing my thoughts about the show since it first started, so this week is no different…

The main couple that I focus on from this show is rapper DMX (Earl Simmons) and his estranged wife, Tashera Simmons.
DMX and Tashera both need a lot of work. He has a big problem with confronting personal failings; instead he chooses to walk away. She has a very hard time differentiating her self-worth from being a ride or die chick. She always wants to pick up the pieces. So, I prepared to watch this week’s show very anxious about what I would witness. If you’ve been watching the show too then you know why I would be so apprehensive.

DMX has presented himself on the show as stubborn and childish. He only wants change when he wants to change. He doesn’t like to be forced into anything and he definitely doesn’t like to rehash old issues—regardless of them being solved or not. So he was preparing to leave the show. Meanwhile, Tashera loves him so much that she’s willing to overlook her own emotional health. So, I was very surprised and delighted tonight when I witnessed growth from both of them on the show.

They sat down together and DMX listened as Tashera tearfully confessed to him that she wants this therapy to work for them and she wants him to stay. She expressed that she isn’t hoping for a reconciliation of marriage right now, but she desires for them to be on better terms with one another.
Then DMX surprised me…

He admitted to being difficult and said that he would be willing to complete this therapy for Tashera. He listened to her and actually allowed her to have a voice in this situation. That was a very big step for him and I applaud him for that. I also applaud Tashera, because she made it very clear that she knew this wasn’t going to be easy, but it was worth it. She said, “No task that God puts us through is easy.” He was willing to stop being stubborn and concede. She was willing to keep trying. That was big for them both.
They still have a long way to go in regards to restoring trust and esteem, but they taught me a lesson this week. I learned that anyone can keep pushing through hard times, even when it seems like there’s no further to go.

To be continued next week…
In the meantime, what did you learn from this week’s show? What did you think about this couple or other couples featured?
