As of late Monday evening, the governor of Florida has decided to seek the assistance of Florida Department of Law Enforcement in the case of Trayvon Martin.Martin is a 17 year old black boy who was shot while walking home from a convenience store near his dad's home in a gated community. He was found lying face down in the grass with a package of skittles and an iced tea in each pocket when police arrived. He was unarmed.
His killer wasn't.
Florida governor, Rick Scott, sent this written statement to the FDLE:
"The circumstances surrounding the death of Trayvon Martin have caused significant concerns within the Sanford community and the state ...I understand an investigation was initiative by the Sanford police department and referred to the Eighteenth Judicial Circuit State Attorney's office. I believe it's appropriate that the FDLE provide any assistance necessary to fully investigate this matter. Accordingly, please ensure that FDLE offers and provides the appropriate resources to State Attorney's office as they continue their investigation."
I'm awfully glad that bigger steps are being pursued...because it my humble opinion that Martin was the victim here. He was a victim of being black. Even journalist Anderson Cooper openly admitted on his CNN show that he wears the same attire as Martin had on and he's never been deemed suspicious. Hmmm.
The United States Department of Justice and the FBI have also released a statement about their decision to open a thorough federal investigation concerning the senseless death of Trayvon.
Regardless of more authorities getting involved, WE have to stay involved. If we don't stand for this injustice, we'll fall for many wrong doings. We need to stand up for our right to be black and the ability to walk anywhere without being deemed suspicious because of a little more melanin in our skin. We must stand up.
