Fatin and Aja, also known to the world as Kindred the Family Soul or simply Kindred, is a married couple who embraces American R&B and soul music as a duo singing group.
The couple emerged from Philadelphia where they were discovered by a phenomenal singer, Jill Scott, who is also a Philly native. The Kindred duo has been previously nominated for a Soul Train music award as well as a BET award. Their music is beyond remarkable.
So why aren’t they as popular as some of these current “R&B” vocalists?
My opinion is that what the music industry is presenting to us now as R&B is NOT traditional R&B. It’s pop music being covered in R&B clothing…and lately, I don’t think it’s even truly being covered in the right clothes. We’ve been given so-called love songs as #1 hits and bedroom music that I wouldn’t feel a bit comfortable playing while “gettin’ it on” with my husband.
The real sense of American R&B or soul music is essentially missing in the music world these days. Of course we have great people like Kem, Jill Scott, and Ledisi who are out there trying hard just as Kindred is to get their music noticed. But it’s not hitting the top of the charts like Chris Brown (whom I love too).Recently, Chris Brown won a Grammy for his music in the R&B category. I was so happy for him, but let’s be real. His music is not the traditional heartfelt, bedroom soul music that I grew up on from my parents in the 80’s and early 90’s. He started out that way, but now it’s definitely integrated into American pop.
However, Kindred the Family Soul place their love in all they do in regards to their music. Not saying that anyone else doesn’t, but you can surely feel the passion and “old school” vibe they present with their songs.
It is sexy, yet simple. Just like Aja and Fatin are.
So that’s why I wanted to write this article. I want to place them in the limelight they so well deserve. They just premiered a new video on Twitter for a song off their most recent album, Love Has No Recession. The song is entitled, “Authentically You” and it gives a great, old-fashioned ambience in the video. Check it out:
So what do you think about the new video? Leave your thoughts below and please share with others!
